Juzo Itamimon oncleWeeks Hardcover Book
This Weeks book features an illustration by Juzo Itami, a genius who exhibited a broad variety of talents across a range of fields such as being a commercial designer, actor, essayist, television presenter, magazine editor-in-chief and film director.
The name mon oncle is French for “my uncle.” This is the name of a magazine Itami was the editor-in-chief for, and the phrase meant a lot to him.
The illustrations on the mon oncle Weeks cover include a bird-shaped lemon press, a phonograph, and a collection of boots—all precious belongings of Itami. They all appeared as illustrations in his 1965 essay “Diary of Boredom in Europe.”
The number ’23 foil-pressed on the cover and book spine were both written by Itami for the sake of a complete collection of books by his father, Mansaku Itami, who was also active in a wide range of fields such as movie direction, screenwriting, and essays. This sharp and beautiful font, named Itami Mincho, serves as a nice accent for the techo.
The cover has been constructed as a light, hardcover book with some give to it so it still bends. The material of the cover is off-white and the texture of a paint canvas. The back of the cover has an illustration from Itami’s essay “The Proper Way to Eat Spaghetti.”
The design’s limitation of color gives it an elegant and chic look that makes it well-suited for both work and personal use.

About Juzo Itami
Born 1933 in Kyoto, his real name was Yoshihiro Ikeuchi. His father was movie director Mansaku Itami. Moved to Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture after the death of his father.
After graduating from high school, he moved to Tokyo, worked in Shintoho’s editorial department, and then became a commercial designer. He traveled Europe, then studied at Butai Geijutsu Gakuin (Performing Arts Academy) and joined Daiei at the age of 26 where he became an actor under the stage name Juzo Itami. He grew into a prolific actor with his strong stage presence, even appearing in foreign films such as 55 Days at Peking and Lord Jim. Received the Kinema Junpo Award for Best Supporting Actor for Family Game and The Makioka Sisters. In the 70’s he produced the documentary series Tooku e Ikitai and was involved in many famous television commercials. He also launched and was the editor-in-chief of the psychoanalytic magazine mon oncle. Made his debut as a film director at age 51 with Funeral, which received high praise and numerous awards such as the Japan Academy Award and the top pick in the Kinema Junpo Top Ten. He then directed ten more films, including Tanpopo, A Taxing Woman, A-Ge-Man: Tales of a Golden Geisha, and Supermarket Woman. Itami is also famous for his essays, and his masterpieces include “European Bored Diary", “Women!,” “A Book for Moms and Dads Being Cornered with Questions,” and “Japan World Stories.” In addition to translation and illustration, Itami was deeply interested in housework and parenting, and had top-class cooking skills. He died in 1997 at 64 years old.

- Test fountain pens before regular use
The Hobonichi Techo's Tomoe River paper is designed to prevent bleed-through, but some fountain pens and water-based ink pens are not compatible with this paper. When switching to a new pen, we recommend testing the pen somewhere in the book, such as the back memo pages, to see if the ink bleeds through or takes an especially long time to dry.
- Cover corners are slightly bumpy and shiny
The corners of the cover contain light traces of press marks, shines, and lumps. This is an unavoidable part of the manufacturing process.
- Coloring may stain other objects
The dye in the cover may stain other objects if it rubs against or sticks to them, especially if the cover is wet from water or sweat from your hands. Please store with care.
- Imprinted year numbers may peel
The numbers of the year are stamped onto the cover in metallic or other colored leaf, so strong rubbing or everyday use may cause the numbers to peel off.
- Avoid storing in hot and humid places
Please avoid storing your product in hot, humid places or placing it atop other objects for long periods of time as this may result in lower quality and color stains.
