MOTHEREarthBound BeginningsHON / A6 Size / Daily / Jan start / Mon start (Japanese)

  • 2024 New

This cover design is based on Shigesato Itoi’s 1989 Famicom game MOTHER (EarthBound Beginnings in North America). The design matches the groundbreakingly simple original cover of the game, with a large golden logo over a red background. The design stood out compared to standard game boxes of its day, and its appeal has only grown over the years.

The back of the cover is bright red with a simple, pared down design. It’s pressed with the logos of the Hobonichi Mother Project and Hobonichi.

This beautiful design encapsulates the feeling of new beginnings in the MOTHER series, which over time would branch into games that captured the hearts of a diverse audience across generations.

It’s a perfect cover for fans of the MOTHER series.

The book spine is foil-pressed in gold with the year 2024 and the HON logo for easy reference when placed in your bookshelf alongside other books.

As a free bonus, this cover includes a pack of 12 clear MOTHER 2 stickers of various sizes.

You can place these stickers somewhere on your techo, or on whichever belonging you’d like to stick some on! The sticker is fade-resistant and slightly water repellant, so you could also put it on a suitcase. We hope you’ll use it however your heart desires!

There are a total of five Mother series designs in the Hobonichi Techo 2024 lineup.

Original A6 cover Attention!, Cousin A5 size cover Boing!, Hobonichi Techo HON “EarthBound Beginnings” hardcover book in A6 size and A5 size, and the Summers design for the Weeks.

The bookbinding on the HON has thread-stitch binding similar to the Hobonichi Techo Original, so it opens 180 degrees onto the table. It stays flat even if you don’t hold it down.

The book uses thin and light yet durable Tomoe River S paper. The paper has supported the Hobonichi Techo for over 20 years with its special characteristics, but it’ll be undergoing an overhaul starting with the 2024 edition techos. The paper is more resistant to bleed through, lighter despite being almost the same thickness, and has a crisper surface by adjusting the fibers of the paper.

The back of the book has informational pages, including An Interview with Myself, Seasonal Sweets to Make at Home, and Caring for Your Eyes.

As a special exclusive only for the HON, this techo comes with a pencil board. The board is A6 size and clear, with 5mm grid lines printed across it. There are measurements printed along one side in 1mm increments, which allow for use as a ruler. This is also a new type of pencil board, as it has a pen holder attached to it where users can store pens by their clips.

A blend of elements: playful, stylish, and cute

We’ve finally reached our tenth year of offering MOTHER series collaboration covers. We’ve got a HON joining the series this year, making a total of 5 types available for an all time high.

The A6 size Attention! cover is filled with billboards and typography from MOTHER 2. You see all kinds of billboards all over towns when you play through the game. The amount of data that could be stored on a Super Famicom game was greatly limited, but the billboards provided a way to make the cities more city-like. The pixel art doesn’t take away from the distinct art style, and each graphic looks really cool. The typography for some of the messages in the game are really memorable, such as Boom, To be continued, and SMAAAASH!!. They all have that distinct style we know MOTHER for, and it’s all crammed into this cover.

The A5 size Boing! cover has quotes from the popular Mr. Saturn characters, in their entertaining language. The interesting thing about this cover is that the quotes are not written in the Mr. Saturn font from the game, but in one based on a handwritten draft from Shigesato Itoi in order to give this design a unique charm that’s a bit different from the usual Mr. Saturn font.

The HON design, Beginnings, matches the design previously released as a standard techo cover. That is, it’s based on the Famicom box art of the original MOTHER game. The Famicom game box is nearly the same ratio as the HON, so the end result turned out quite stylish. Art director Masaharu Takada, who designed the original box art for the game, said he wanted it to look like a chocolate bar by putting gold letters onto a bright red background. Even if you haven’t played the game, we hope you’ll be drawn in by this cover and try it out.

We’ve tried a variety of approaches to the Weeks over the years, and this year we went with the design for Summers, the resort town in MOTHER 2. The way the year 2024 isn’t even located in its usual position on the cover also gives this Weeks book a very “Summers” feel. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to spend the whole year with the kind of relaxed feeling you can only get from a resort town?

This year’s bonus item for these products are stickers with the designs from “Attention!”. These 12 clear stickers are great for your techo, or for sticking on your favorite things.

Please Read Before You Buy

In order to provide you with the most satisfaction for your product, we've compiled a list of warnings, potential issues, and tips to keep in mind for this particular product. Please be sure to read this information carefully before placing your order.

Test fountain pens before regular use

The Hobonichi Techo's Tomoe River / Tomoe River S paper is designed to prevent bleed-through, but some fountain pens and water-based ink pens are not compatible with this paper. When switching to a new pen, we recommend testing the pen somewhere in the book, such as the back memo pages, to see if the ink bleeds through or takes an especially long time to dry.

Characteristics of materials and product design may result in white spots on the edges and corners of the front and back.

Characteristics of materials and product design may result in white spots on the edges and corners of the front and back. The corners of the cover contain light traces of press marks, shines, and lumps. This is an unavoidable part of the manufacturing process.

Cannot be used with a Hobonichi Techo Cover or Cover on Cover. Please use the Clear Cover for HON.

The cover of the HON book is thicker and firmer than that of the Hobonichi Techo book. It cannot be used with a Techo cover designed for the standard Hobonichi Techo book. The Cover on Cover designed for standard Hobonichi Techo covers also will not fit the HON. Please use the Clear Cover for HON. Please do not use excessive force when applying the cover as this may cause damage.
