This polar bear almost seems to fade into the light background behind him. He intently watches the user with his cute, round eyes, little ears, and big nose. The art is incredibly charming, but there’s more to it than that. This is a design that you can feel looking at you. His eyes have something lonely yet tender about them, with an expression that undoubtedly touches each person differently.
Polar Bear is a copperplate print by artist Kazuo Mochizuki. It is one of his defining works, and was the cover art for his one and only collective book of works. Mochizuki spent his life working as a silkscreen craftsman before retiring and taking up copperplate printing. He opened his first solo gallery at 68 years old and quickly grew to fame in his senior years.

In order to provide you with the most satisfaction for your product, we've compiled a list of warnings, potential issues, and tips to keep in mind for this particular product.

- All covers are hand-made and may contain slight variances
Each and every cover is individually sewn by a factory worker hand-operating a sewing machine. Best efforts are made to ensure consistent sizes and specifications, but there may be slight differences.
- Silk printed image may peel off over time
The logo inside the cover is silk-printed onto the cover’s material. This delicate print may peel or come off with daily use. If using a Cover on Cover, the silk print may stick to the plastic and eventually come off with it from the constant contact.
- Design may contain smudges or uneven coloring
During the print process, patterns may contain spots where the color has become smudged or uneven.
- White spots around stitching
The design is printed over white material, so the sewing process may expose white areas around the stitches.
- Color may vary slightly between cover and pockets
The material for each part of the cover is printed or dyed separately. While colors are designed to be consistent across the entire cover, the shade may vary slightly.
- Pen holders are rigid at first
The pen holders are rigid at first, making it difficult to insert pens. You can speed up the breaking-in process by rolling the pen holders in your hand.
- Sliding no-slip pens into the pen holder
Pens with rubber, non-slip grips may be difficult to slide into the pen holder.
- Avoid exposing Cover on Cover to cold temperatures
The PVC plastic of the Cover on Cover may lose elasticity and become difficult to put on when left in cold temperatures. If this happens, we recommend letting the product sit in a warm area before applying to your cover. Please be careful when handling your Cover on Cover in cold temperatures, as it becomes more susceptible to damages if dropped or handled roughly.
- “Cover Only” price change
Due to an increase in material costs and other unavoidable factors, starting with the 2017-edition, it has become difficult to maintain the usual price of our Colors and Faux Fabric covers. In order to maintain the price of the covers, we will be offering these covers at the usual price when bought as a set with the Hobonichi Techo book. We apologize for the trouble, but when ordering the cover without a book, we will not be able to keep that price, so Cover Only orders will cost slightly more. Please add to your cart as a “Book & Cover set” to keep the cover’s lower price.
